Case study: Tablelands Regional Council Local Heritage Survey

The Culture and Heritage Unit was engaged by the Tablelands Regional Council to carry out a heritage survey of its local government area in Far North Queensland. The team identified over 1000 heritage places from across the Atherton Tablelands, from Millaa Millaa to Chillagoe, Yungaburra to Mareeba.

The survey documented historic pubs and civic buildings, the archaeological remains of World War II training camps, timber churches and Chinese temples, abandoned mine sites and late nineteenth century ghost towns.

The survey assisted the council to prepare its own register of heritage places.
