Case study: World Heritage Archaeology

The Culture and Heritage Unit's archaeologists have provided fieldwork and laboratory services at two sites listed on the World Heritage List: the Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne and Old Government House in Parramatta. Our archaeological laboratory analysed soil and seed remains from around the Royal Exhibition Building, assisting in the reconstruction of the nineteenth century gardens.

Our Director carried out archaeological excavation of the convict-era Old Government House, exposing brick wall footings from the residence that Governor Arthur Philip occupied, and finding a button from the shirt of a convict, stamped with the convict 'broad arrow'.
